Oil, service indicators and oil specifications
Many BMWs use a condition-based service system, where the car's display tells you when oil service and other items are due based on how it is driven, instead of one fixed interval. BMW also specifies oils that meet its own approvals, often listed in the manual as BMW Longlife, so use the oil your owner's manual calls for.
Known BMW wear items
Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets are well-known wear items on many BMW engines, as are plastic cooling system parts such as the thermostat housing, water pump and expansion tank. If you notice an oil smell, drips, a coolant warning or a rising temperature gauge, have it checked promptly.
Some BMWs, depending on model and year, use run-flat tires. Battery registration, where a new battery is registered with the car's electronics, applies to most BMWs from the mid-2000s on. Ask about both before you buy tires or a battery.
